Banned Design Elements

October 25th, 2007 · No Comments

I’m starting a “Banned Design Elements” category to argue that there are certain examples out there that prove the need for graphic artists.

I’ll be the first to admit that Graphic Design work is often the hardest thing to spend money on, both because it’s a pretty intangible product (you don’t get a physical thing to touch that will replace the money you spent) and also because it often looks overly easy. I can recall several times in the past thinking, “Gee… I could have come up with that!”

Here’s the deal.

It is my professional experience that money spent on graphic design is money well-spent, and any money saved by skimping in the design department is quickly lost either in “street cred” or real dollars.

The “Banned Design Elements” category is meant to take a light-hearted look at bad design.

So… without further adieu, the first two banned design elements are both fonts:

COMIC SANS IS BANNED! and PAPYRUS IS BANNED!

These two fonts hold the honor of being the first design elements to be banned because, to begin with, they are WAY WAY WAY WAY WAY WAY WAY W-A-Y over-used. They are default fonts on every Microsoft machine and because they are not Arial nor Times New Roman (the typical default fonts for Word), most people use them to “jazz-up” everything form signs to emails; but perhaps worst of all… people use these fonts in logos.

NO MUSICIAN OR MUSIC ORGANIZATION SHOULD EVER USE THESE FONTS –EVER!!!

Email me if you have more suggestions
